The holidays are fast approaching, and if you’re like most people you are already dreading the day when you have to go gift shopping. Last year, your shopping list almost made you bankrupt, and this year you vow to get your holiday expenses under control. Don’t believe what other people tell you, it is actually possible to survive the holiday season without a lot of money on gifts. Here are a couple of tips that might help you get through the holidays with your wallet still intact.
Make a shopping list
This might seem like the most basic thing that you would do when holiday gift shopping, but it is not just about making a list, it is about sticking to it that counts. Create a list of the people who you will be giving gifts to, and make sure that you double and triple check it so you can be sure that you are not leaving anyone out. Once you have a complete list, you can set a budget on how much you are willing to spend on every person on your list. This way, you can set a reasonable budget for gifts.
Pay in cash
When you go to the mall, make sure that you leave your credit cards at home, and just bring enough cash to cover the costs of your gifts, plus ten or twenty dollars more just so you have some wiggle room. If you bring your cards with you, they will make you feel as if you have more money than you actually do. Bringing just enough cash to cover your gift shopping will make it easier for you to stick to your shopping list and steer clear from impulse buying other things.
Leave the kids at home
Sure, you may have to lug all of the shopping bags by yourself, but if you leave the kids at home while you go gift shopping will allow you to concentrate on buying only the things on your list. If you bring other people with you, there’s no stopping them from placing random items into your shopping cart; this applies to your spouse as well as your kids.
Remember that this is the season to give, not buy
You don’t have to spend a crazy amount on gifts. As long as you put a lot of thought on the gift, the receiver would surely appreciate it. It is better to give a reasonably priced item that the receiver would appreciate rather than spending hundreds on something that you are not even sure the other person might want.
