Summer is notorious for its role in increasing electric bills. There are 2 things that explain this phenomenon: increased usage and increased generation rates.
Fortunately, there are many ways you can avoid these increased costs. Here are 5 of the simplest and most effective ways to save on electricity during the summer.
- Take note of “energy leaks” – One of the best ways to avoid extra electrical costs is by simply turning off devices that are not being used. This simple technique can help you save a lot in electricity in the long run. Unplug appliances that you are not using. Turn off lights that are n ot in use. Also, limit the use of appliances that consume high amounts of electricity such as big-screen TVs and irons to as-needed basis.
- Take advantage of natural light during the day – During the summer, sunlight is at its most abundant. So why not take full advantage of it? If there are areas in your house that allow light to go in (ex.: windows), take advantage of them. It can help you save money on lighting costs. However, in rooms that are not being used, it’s smart to cover up windows using blinds, shades, or curtains to prevent excess heat from entering.
- Use air conditioning wisely – Air conditioning is a virtual necessity during the hottest of days. However, indiscriminate use of it can lead to extremely high energy costs. Put the thermostat in a temperature that’s cool enough for comfort but not too cold that it becomes counterproductive. Also, consider turning off your air conditioner during the cooler times of the day (ex.: night and early morning).
- Use appliances during off-peak hours – Using appliances during peak hours can lead to high electric bills. This is especially when you’re using appliances that consume high amounts of electricity. One strategy to lower your bills is to use these appliances during off-peak hours when the cost of electricity is not as high. Off-peak hours include early morning and night, when not a lot of people are using electricity simultaneously. You can ask your local electric company about off-peak hours and respective rates.
- Spend more time outdoors – One way to beat the heat is to spend more time outdoors. As long as it is not too hot outside, visiting places such as beaches and parks would be a great idea during summer days. When it’s too hot, going to museums, malls, or the cinema is a great way to escape the heat. Staying outdoors allows you to have a great time while keeping your electric bills low.
